- Tim Robey, The Telegraph

"Invoking the spirit of Madame Bovary, Thérèse Desqueyroux and Lady Chatterley, Lady Macbeth is an intelligently scripted and imposingly played costume noir that revisits the conventions of Victorian melodrama to comment on modern attitudes to oppression, prejudice and morality"
- David Parkinson, Empire

"This brilliantly feminist British indie film is like a Jane Austen story with a dash of sex and murder. Newcomer Florence Pugh is like a lightning bolt. What an extraordinary film"
- Cath Clarke, Time Out

"The riveting debut Lady Macbeth plays like a cross between Wuthering Heights and The Postman Always Rings Twice. With abrasiveness, attitude and originality in abundance, it is one of the most original and assured British debut features of recent times"
- Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent

"Florence Pugh’s portrayal of a 19th century damsel sold into marriage is a tour de force. A pared-down drama that packs a real punch, Oldroyd’s film has a cogency and a fearlessness that automatically set it apart from most costume dramas"
- Neil Smith, Total Film

Join us on Thursday 27 April for a preview screening of new feature film Lady Macbeth. Directed by acclaimed theatre director William Oldroyd and starring Florence Pugh and Cosmo Jarvis, the film is based on Nikolai Leskov’s nineteenth century novella Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.

Lady Macbeth is a tragic portrait of a beautiful, determined and merciless young woman in a world dominated by men. Set in rural England, 1865, Katherine (Florence Pugh) is stifled by her loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, and his cold, unforgiving family. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on her husband’s estate, a force is unleashed inside her so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants...
