8 OSCAR NOMINATIONS INCLUDING BEST PICTURE, BEST ACTOR CHRISTIAN BALE, BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR SAM ROCKWELL & BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS AMY ADAMS.
"Bale brilliantly captures the former vice-president’s bland magnificence in Adam McKay’s entertainingly nihilist biopic."
- Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
"The ensemble is magnificently rude and amoral, but even better is Vice’s thrusting spirit of montage -- daredevil editing that hasn’t been attempted since the high-flying heyday of Oliver Stone."
- Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out
"An acting masterclass that neither pulls its punches nor sacrifices detail to pander to a mass audience, this is smart filmmaking from a director who gets better with every film - and a near career-best from Bale, which is saying something."
- Andrew Lowry, Empire Magazine
"It is a head-spinning shock-and-awe satire that comes in hot then cranks up the thermostat to infernal - a Molotov cocktail of biopic, documentary and black comedy, with a thrillingly short fuse."
- Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph
"It’s a more ambitious political satire...Because it’s about real people, real politicians and real deranged ambitions, and it places much of the blame for today’s geopolitical ills...directly at their door. Oh, and it’s also very funny."
- Kevin Maher, Times
"It’s a skilled piece of comic acting which has the unlikely effect of making Cheney buffoonish as well as sinister... But McKay is quick to remind us what happened on Cheney’s watch."
- Geoffrey Macnab, Independent
"Writer/director Adam McKay’s savage and satirical film chronicles Cheney’s entire career, although it’s the VP years that provide the heft of a sinister true-life drama of Shakespearean proportions."
- Terry Staunton, Radio Times
"It’s an exhilarating explosion of a biopic."
- Larushka Ivan-Zadeh, Metro
Christian Bale is Vice-president Dick Cheney in this brilliant reconstruction of the madness of the George W. Bush presidency. An arch-manipulator, Cheney plays business, politics and warfare as mere tools for his personal gain, with his wife Lynne (Amy Adams) as his confidante. Sam Rockwell plays willing dupe Bush alongside Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, offering us a panoramic portrait of the craven misuse of political power.
Following The Big Short, Adam McKay’s has marked himself out as a director with a unique talent for imaginative takes on recent history. Christian Bale’s performance as Cheney – one of many in the film likely to attract awards attention – goes far beyond impersonation, hiding a shark’s viciousness just behind the eyes.
